A little planning makes a curtain-light display easier to position, use and pack away. This checklist helps you prepare your space. Follow the instructions supplied with your exact light set for mounting, power and app setup; this guide does not replace them.
1. Choose a location you can use comfortably
Start with one focal area: a window, an interior wall or another suitable display surface. Keep doors, exits, vents and opening windows clear. Think about where people walk and where children or pets can reach hanging cords.
Measure the available space and cable route before buying. Our curtain-light size guide explains the measurements to record. For a rental, check which mounting methods your landlord allows.
2. Check the exact set and its instructions
Before installation, compare the contents with the supplier's packing list. Locate the controller, power supply and instructions. Check that the plug and electrical ratings suit your location. Inspect the cables and connectors; do not use damaged equipment.
Do not infer outdoor suitability from a product photograph. Lights, controllers, connectors and adapters may have different exposure limits. Only install outdoors when the complete intended setup is approved for that use by the manufacturer. If the rating is unclear, ask before installing.
3. Plan the mounting and power route
Use supports approved for the product and suitable for the surface. Avoid methods that pierce, crush or tightly pinch wires. Leave the controller accessible and keep cables away from door hinges and walking routes. Follow the manufacturer's spacing and support requirements rather than stretching the set to fit.
Never assume separate sets can be connected together. Use only supported power supplies and connection arrangements. If safe access or electrical suitability is uncertain, get help from a qualified professional instead of improvising.
4. Check operation before completing the display
With the set arranged as the manual requires, check its operation before committing to the final layout. Use the app named in the supplied instructions. Connection methods differ between products, so follow the exact steps for your controller rather than assuming every set uses Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.
Check the display from the position where it will normally be viewed. Confirm that your chosen pattern is readable and that the brightness feels comfortable. Only use dimming, timers or other controls if your model supports them.
5. Make everyday use simple
Keep the instructions and order details together. Note how to disconnect power and access the controller. For outdoor displays, consider neighbors and local building rules when choosing the hours of use. Follow the product instructions for unattended use, cleaning and storage.
When the season ends, disconnect the lights before taking them down. Let any damp equipment dry as directed, avoid tight bends, and label each set so next year's setup is easier.
